Creating and simulating the movements & appearance of realistic animal fur is an interesting and a relatively difficult topic in computer graphics. Since such a simulation requires surfaces consisting of hundreds of thousands of individual hair strands, implementing a real-time simulation becomes a very difficult job. Rendering the hair strands, applying forces etc. are all time consuming operations and most of the time the capabilities of the processors are not enough for such calculations. In our approach, for each strand, by using mass-spring systems combined with articulated calculations and with performance optimizations, we are trying to achieve a real-time animal fur animation which also looks and acts realistic.
